H.E. Dr. Dian Triansyah Djani is currently (starting February 2021) the Special Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Priorities Issues in charge of G20 Presidency and CoSherpa. He was the former Ambassador / Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations and other International Organizations in New York (2016- 2021). Prior to that assignment, Ambassador Djani was the Director General for America and Europe (2012-2016), Ambassador/ Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the UN, WTO and other International Organization in Geneva (2009-2012) as well as Director General for ASEAN of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2005-2009), He started his career as a diplomat in 1985 and was posted at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia in New York in 1991-1994 and the Permanent Mission of the Indonesia in Geneva in 1997-2001.
During his term as Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York (2016-2021), he served as Chairman on the Economic and Social Committee for 2016-2017, President of the Security Council for May 2019 and August 2020, and Indonesian Ambassador to the UN Security Council. He was also tasked by the Secretary general of the United Nations as member of the High Level Panel on UN Habitat, Vice President to the UN Committee on Decolonisation as well as Vice President of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian.
As Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, WTO and other International Organizations in Geneva (2009-2012), Ambassador Djani served as the Vice President of the UN Human Rights Council in 2009, President of the UNCTAD Trade and Development Board for 2009 and co-chair of the Standing Committee on Stockpile Destruction for the Mine Ban Convention for 2010, member of the Consultative Group of the Human Rights Council (2011-2012). He also serves as Chairman of the G 77 and China in UNCTAD for 2012.
He represented Indonesia in various international conferences, such as the UN general Assembly, Non-Aligned Movement, World Trade Organization (WTO), D8, G77, G15, ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD), Asia-Middle East Dialogue (AMED), Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM), UNCTAD, WIPO, UNIDO, WHO, ILO, ITU, Conference on Disarmament, UNDP, Asian-African Summit, and Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD). He was also a member of the Global Commission on Internet Governance.
Serving as Director General of ASEAN Cooperation, he was Head of Delegation to the ASEAN Standing Committee representing Indonesia in many ASEAN Conferences as well as ASEAN Meetings with its Dialogue Partners. In 2007, he was also appointed as the Indonesia’s Head of Delegation to the High Level Task Force (HLTF) on drafting the ASEAN Charter.
Mr. Dian Triansyah Djani, received his graduate Degree in Economics from the University of Indonesia specializing in international trade, and the Graduate Programme in Economic Development at Vanderbilt University, USA. His Doctoral degree is in International Relations from Pajajaran Univeristy, Bandung, Indonesia.
He is a Guest Lecturer at various higher learning institutions on multilateral negotiations, political and security as well as international trade/economic issues, both in Indonesia and abroad. Mr. Dian Triansyah Djani is married to Lista Damayanti Djani also graduate from the Faculty of Economics University of Indonesia (FEUI) and has one son, Panji Caraka Djani who is also a graduate of FEUI and Columbia University, USA. He is interested in sports and enjoys reading and traveling.
