Economic and Social Research Institute (LPEM) – Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia is a research institution that is an integral part of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia, as well as being the largest academic research community in Universitas Indonesia. For more than 60 years, LPEM FEB UI has become one of the leading academic institutions in Indonesia that play a role in contributing ideas through research, consultation, and educational activities.

History

The establishment of a research center within the academic community of the Faculty of Economics, Universitas Indonesia cannot be separated from the role of Prof. Dr. Soemitro Djojohadikusumo. In 1952, Prof. Dr. Soemitro Djojohadikusumo, who at that time, served as Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Universitas Indonesia, established two research centers, namely: Business Administration Seminar and Social Research Center. The purpose of establishing the two research centers is to support research activities carried out by the candidates. A year later, in November 1953, the Social Research Center changed its name to the Economic and Social Research Institute (LPEM FEB UI). In 1956, the Business Administration Seminar merged into LPEM FEB UI.

Today's Role

In its development, LPEM actively plays a role in research and educational activities. Most of the research and educational activities are in collaboration with government or private agencies, both domestically and abroad.

Government or private agencies and foreign institutions that are clients of LPEM for research activities include Bank Indonesia, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Trade, Ministry of Industry, Toyota Astra Motor, Sucofindo, MEDCO Group, Indosat, Media Indonesia, Surveyor Indonesia, World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), International Monetary Fund (IMF), The Asia Foundation, National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), International Labour Organization (ILO), World Trade Organization (WTO), United Nations of Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

As for educational activities, some of LPEM’s clients include: National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS), Secretariat General of DPR-RI, DKI Jakarta Regional Government, Meteorology Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), and the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU). In the last 35 years, LPEM FEB UI has completed more than 700 research activities in various fields. To adapt to changing times, LPEM is divided into the following seven research groups:

  • Macroeconomic and Financial Sector Policy Research Group
  • Environmental Economics Research Group
  • Digital Economics and Behavioral Economics Research Group
  • Business Climate and Global Value Chain Research Group
  • Social and Community Empowerment Research Group
