The Identity of the Faculty of Economics and Business

The Universitas Indonesia logo was created in 1952 by Sumaxtono (real name Sumartono), a student of the Department of Arts, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia Bandung, Class of 1951. The basic idea of the logo is kala-makara, which means two powers that exist in nature: kala as the power above (the power of the Sun) and makara as the power below (the power of the Earth). The two powers were combined and refined by Sumaxtono into makara, which symbolizes Universitas Indonesia as both a source of knowledge and the result that is spread in all directions.

The tree with its branches and buds symbolize knowledge with its branches of science while the buds will one day bloom to become a new branch of science. The buds will surely bloom as long as the tree of knowledge remains alive. Sumaxtono wanted to state that the branches of knowledge will bloom according to need and the progress of time.

Makara, which discharges water, symbolizes the results that are spread in all directions. Sumaxtono wanted to convey the message that Universitas Indonesia as a source of knowledge will produce graduates who are intelligent, skillful, devout, virtuous, personable, open, responsive to change and advances in science and technology as well as problems faced by society, and are able to solve them according to academic rules, no matter where they are.

Sumaxtono showed the design draft and its meaning to Srihadi (a student of the Department of Arts, FT-UI Bandung, Class of 1952) in 1952. Prof. KRHT H. Srihadi Soedarsono Adhikoesoemo, M.A. – who was also the creator of the Bandung Institute of Technology logo – did not know when or who approved the UI logo. What is certain is that the book cover of Universiteit Indonesia, Fakulteit Teknik, Bandung: Rentjana Untuk Tahun Peladjaran 1952-1953 (AID Printing, Bandung, 120 pgs.) used the Universitas Indonesia logo for the first time as designed by Sumaxtono (without the pentagon frame).
