Improving the Value of Palm Oil Derivative Products through Follow-up on the Potential Development of the Santripreneurs Based on Palm Oil Small and Medium Enterprises in the Riau Region

DEPOK – (28/10/2021) The development of palm oil derivative products by Islamic Boarding Schools through palm oil-based UKMK (MSMEs) is one of the activities carried out by the Palm Oil Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDPKS), in collaboration with the Center for Islamic Economics and Business, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia (PEBS FEB UI), which in turn is supported by the Islamic Boarding School Economic Business Association (Hebitren) of Riau Province. This activity can also increase the confidence of the potential PSR program participants in the Islamic boarding school to participate in the program, so that the PSR realization can be achieved according to targets. The Palm Oil Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDPKS) as a BLU, in addition to promotional activities also has the task of carrying out Government policies in the sustainable palm oil development program through the collection, development, and distribution of integrated and effective palm oil funds, in a professional and accountable manner, for the benefit of Human Resources development, Research and Development, Rejuvenation, Facilities and Infrastructure, Fulfillment of Food Needs, Downstreaming of the Oil Palm Plantation Industry, and Provision and Utilization of Biofuels. The performance of BPDPKS is based on its ability to collect, manage and distribute funds to have an impact on improving the performance of the Indonesian palm oil sector.

The Palm Oil SMEs-Based Santripreneur Development Program as a Regional Economic Empowerment Program was launched by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia and the Minister of Finance in collaboration between BPDPKS and PEBS FEB UI on October 1, 2020, involving the Rector of Universitas Indonesia, and 3 Governors of the Provinces of Riau, North Sumatra and South Sumatra. This program is aimed at improving the welfare of smallholder oil palm planters through the development of palm oil-based SMEs in Islamic boarding schools.

The initial series of activities have been carried out in 2020, namely the initial data collection of Islamic boarding schools and program launching, assessment and selection of Islamic boarding schools, bootcamp programs for developing potential student entrepreneurs based on Palm Oil Small and Medium Enterprises, monitoring program implementation, and evaluating program implementation in the Riau, North Sumatra, and South Sumatra Provinces. South. In 2021, the program will focus on one area, namely Riau so that monitoring can be conducted more intensively and become a model for other regions later on.

The main principles of the Palm Oil SMEs-Based Santripreneur Development Program are sustainability (supporting business sustainability), welfare (improving the welfare of Islamic boarding schools and surrounding communities), and being environmentally friendly (supporting sustainable and environmentally friendly palm oil management). Therefore, in order to follow up the Santripreneur Development Program Based on Small and Medium Enterprises and Oil Palm Cooperatives (UKMK) as a Regional Economic Empowerment Program, it is necessary to make efforts to sharpen and expand the implementation of this program, one of which is through a series of activities to improve the image of Palm Oil Derivative products.

This activity needs to be carried out to increase knowledge about the significance of palm oil  plantations as a product that has strategic value, especially for the community in the Islamic boarding school environment. This is done to improve the image of the value of palm oil products, market information, expanding the market, increasing investment, and/or developing a marketing center for plantation commodities. This is one of the efforts to promote oil palm plantations in Islamic boarding schools.

This activity is expected to increase partnerships between SMEs in the palm oil sector and other parties, both upstream and downstream. With the potential of palm oil- based land owned by the Islamic boarding school environment, it is hoped that data consolidation of palm oil land will occur. This is also useful in helping to accelerate the realization of the implementation of the People’s Palm Oil Rejuvenation Program (PSR) implemented by BPDPKS. Institutionally, communities in Islamic boarding schools can form palm oil-based SMEs and develop palm oil derivative products, according to the potential and opportunities existing in the surrounding areas.

The series of activities to Increase the Value of Palm Oil Derivative Products through Follow-up on the Potential Development of Palm Oil-Based Santripreneurs in the Riau Region include dissemination of the 2021 Santripreneur Program, technical workshops on the development of palm oil derivative products, inauguration of demonstration plots for the development of palm oil derivative products, curation and consolidation of palm oil derivative products, as well as the launch and virtual exhibition of superior products from the 2021 Santripreneuer Program.

There are 9 (nine) products developed in this program, namely  the BSF maggot cultivation, organic fertilizer from palm oil waste, animal feed from palm oil waste, bath soap (decorated bars), anti-allergic soap, dish soap, hand soap, hand sanitizers, and disinfectants. There are 10 (ten) Islamic boarding schools in Riau Province that were selected for the 2021 Santripreneur Program, namely PP Al Amin (Dumai City), PP Azam Insan Darussalam (YAZID) (Rokan Hulu Regency), PP Baitul Qur’an (Dumai City), PP Daarul Qur’an Darussalam (Rokan Hulu Regency), PP At Thohiriyah (Rokan Hilir Regency), PP Tahfidzul Qur’an Al Multazam (Indragiri Hulu Regency), PP Syafaaturrosul (Kuantan Singingi Regency), PP Nurul Yakin (Siak Regency), PP Ittihadul Muslimin (Siak Regency), and PP Ibnu Sina (Siak Regency).

From the Launching and Virtual Exhibition of the Best Products of Santripreneur 2021, the commitment of the 2021 Santripreneur Program can be emphasized as follows:

  1. The Pesantren institution has 3 functions, namely education, da’wah, and economic empowerment. Economic empowerment must be immediately launched because from the data from the Ministry of Religion it is stated that all Islamic boarding schools operate independently and require fundamental entrepreneurship development for the sustainability of Islamic boarding schools, in accordance with the advice of the Prophet Muhammad SAW to be empowered scientifically and economically.
  1. The 10 Islamic boarding schools participating in the 2021 Santripreneur program guaranteed a commitment to the development of the main palm oil derivative products, namely sanitation derivative products, BSF maggot cultivation and organic fertilizer from palm oil waste. PEBS FEB UI is committed to continuing business development assistance to improve the image of the value of palm oil derivative products, especially emphasizing digital marketing. The products selected for development must meet the 3K (Quality, Quantity and Continuity) aspects. Products developed must follow the Halal Value Chain.

It is hoped that this activity can continue until the Pesantren can produce products that are competitive and accepted in the marketplacew.
