THE World University Rankings: UI Named Indonesia’s Best University

Times Higher Education, an international university ranking body, has released World University Rankings (WUR) 2021 via https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings. Universitas Indonesia (UI) is ranked in the range of 801-1000 in the world and was named the best university in Indonesia. UI is the only university from Indonesia to join this group. As many as 1,500 universities in 93 countries entered the THE WUR 2021.

THE consistently emphasizes the following indicators in its assessment of a university: Teaching Performance (teaching and learning activities); Research; Transfer and Sharing of Scientific Data, as well as International Coverage. UI gained a total score of 25.5-30.1 with a performance per indicator as follows: Teaching Performance score of 37.6; Research 20.7; Citation of Scientific Papers 15.2; Synergy with the Industry Sector 84.5; and International Coverage 51.3.

UI’s most outstanding performance is its synergy with the industry sector. THE uses this indicator to assess the ability of a university in supporting the industry through innovation breakthroughs, inventions or ideas that meet the needs of an industry or society. UI focuses on becoming a think tank as well as problem-solving institution. With a focus on three research clusters, namely health, social humanities and technology and science, UI is committed to producing solutions that benefit the industry and society.

UI Rector Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D said, “This is a great achievement and shows that Indonesia, and UI in particular, are increasingly acknowledged by the global community. UI remains the best in Indonesia. Amid the current difficult situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, UI remains committed to providing solutions to the COVID-19 problem through innovation, research and community service activities. Contributions of lecturers, researchers, staff, and students as well as collaboration with industries, the government and society help UI make great achievements and have an impact on the country.”

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, universities must remain open to the global world. Thanks to the sophisticated information and communication technology, UI academics can continue to participate in international competitions, expand cross-continent research collaboration, and strengthen college networks through engagement with regional and international associations.

This achievement is also an achievement of the nation that helps UI gain international recognition. As the locomotive of higher education in Indonesia, UI will move toward becoming a university that can contribute more to increase national growth and global competitiveness, promote innovation and entrepreneurship as well as solve social issues.
