Idekonomi Podcast with LD FEB UI: “Those Who Are Forgotten During the Pandemic”

Hana Fajria ~ PR of FEB UI

DEPOK – (28/8/2020) Idekonomi collaborated with the Demographic Institute of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia (LD FEB UI), in discussing the latest joint study between LD FEB UI and UNESCO, entitled “Those Who Are Forgotten During the Pandemic”, broadcasted via podcast Idekonomi.

The speakers at this podcast were two LD FEB UI researchers, Diahhadi Setyonaluri and Rachmat Reksa Samudra, who thoroughly discussed inequality of benefits received by residents from pandemic-related government programs.

The number of confirmed positive Covid-19 cases in Indonesia continues to experience an increasing trend. As of 8/27, the figure has reached more than 160,000 cases. Indonesia itself is officially one of the countries with the highest number of cases in Southeast Asia, along with the Philippines.

The pandemic in Indonesia is getting worse and has not only resulted in the emergence of a health crisis, but also an economic crisis. For this reason, the government actively continues to roll out social assistance and support programs that are expected to help residents to respond to the economic and health difficulties that they are facing.

The variety of difficulties experienced by residents encourages the importance for each aid program to be well-targeted during the pandemic. Diahhadi and Resa discussed who needs help more and the benefits of the existing program.

According to Diahhadi, “With limited physical space, priority is given to those who need assistance at this difficult time, namely groups of poor women and groups of people with disabilities who are vulnerable / poor. These two groups are the most disadvantaged because they face difficulty in accessing proper healthcare while requiring intensive care,” concluded Diah.

It is expected that in the future, there will be improvement for the formulation of more inclusive and effective policies that can help vulnerable groups who need this assistance.
