Ivan Hardi, an economics student at the University of Indonesia’s Faculty of Economics and Business, won ‘Honorable Mention’ at the Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN) World Trade Organization committee.

Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN) is a competition organized by Harvard University and is the oldest Model United Nations (MUN) competition, and one of the largest in the prestigious competition in the world.

In 2020 the holding of 66th HNMUN was held on February 13-16, 2020 at Boston Park Plaza, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

MUN is also a simulation of the UN session in the debate competition on a particular topic representing a country that integrates the capabilities of speech, negotiation, research, and document making. In this competition, Ivan discussed Combatting Climate Change through Environmental Subsidies.

Only this time, throughout history, including Ivan, there were only 2 people who got this title in Indonesia

“In MUN, the winning prize given is in the form of a certificate. Even so, because the event is very prestigious and organized by Harvard University, the title is very valuable, “said Ivan.

HNMUN is annually attended by more than 2000 delegates and from more than 60 countries. Because it was held in America, many American students attended the conference such as Stanford University, Yale University, London School of Economics, UC Berkeley, and many others.

The topic discussed by Ivan in the World Trade Organization committee was Combatting Climate Change through Environmental Subsidies.

“This committee wants to discuss the role that the World Trade Organization can do to reduce climate change in the perspective of international trade,” Ivan said.

“There are a lot of sub-topics discussed, such as inefficient international trade routes, the imposition of a Feed-In Tariffs / Emission Trading System, and others that can be recommended to countries in the world. I feel proud to be able to take part in this prestigious event which is strongly supported by the university and the delegation, “he said.

Ivan is also very grateful to the coaches and alumni who have helped prepare for this race.

“My hope is that more and more Indonesian students will participate in MUN due to the large number of skills trained. In MUN, not only speech skills are trained, but also negotiations are carried out, as well as new topics being studied. I believe MUN trains transferable abilities in work and daily life, “
